Welcome

Guyana is a diverse land, that has one of the richest cultures that I have ever experienced. Though I was born in the United States, my entire family is from Guyana, and thus I have a strong connection to its customs and traditions. This small country is not known to many, and is often confused with Ghana, located in West Africa. I hope the information on this site helps you to to gain an appreciation for this beautiful country. Enjoy!

Guyana's national bird is the hoatzin, and this primmitve looking bird is believed to be evolved from dinosaurs. This bird has a short fat body, stout legs and feet, a long broad tail, long scruffy neck, and a tiny head capped by a crest of spiky feathers. It hardly ever flies, and when it does, it is only for short distances. Its strong musky odor helps to keep predators away.

National Flower

Guyana's national flower is the Victoria water lilly, named after Queen Victoria. This beautiful flower is native to the Amazon and the surrounding areas of South America, and it emits a tropical scent reminiscent of bananas and ripe pineapples.

Guyana is a rich land made up of six races: Afro-Guyanese, Indo-Guyanese, Chinese, Caucasian, Portuguese, and Amerindian. The unity of these people is reflected in its motto, "One people, one nation, one destiny."
